Shining Beautiful comes from Mikelle’s Korean name, Mee Jeong. We are told it means shining beautiful—a hint of how destiny would lead this orphaned child, who couldn’t walk or talk, into a future which would help change the world for others who experience disability.

Abandoned at birth, Mikelle became a pioneer in the movement towards inclusive education of all students, no matter what ability. As a student in the Denver Public School system, she busted through barriers —ultimately graduating “Outstanding Senior” from Denver’s East High School.

Not long after graduation, Mikelle could be found rolling through the halls of Congress, where she briefed Senators, Congressional men and women on the heartfelt desire of people with disabilities to work, creating productive and meaningful lives.

Later she would be invited to speak at the National Press Club in Washington, DC and many other speaking platforms across the country as she focused her presentations on possibilities, not limitations.

Not bad for a girl who can’t walk or talk without the use of technology.

Caring hearts connecting, uniting in simple, unique ways, making a huge difference is what our story of Shining Beautiful is all about.
